Huh.

So, work IT went from 'oh, right, we have free-range internets around here somewhere' to "We are watching YOU! 2+2=5" in the space of about two days. (Webnanny settings used to be REALLY tame - blocked social sites like myspace, and keywords like 'adult' or 'lingerie' or 'games'. Simple, logical. Now I can't even get into things like Google Documents because they've included the keyword 'personal' in there, but Calendar and Mail are fine. Bizarro. The unit manager even said that we may have to email to have things un-blocked for WORK purposes. How is this process improvement, again? o.O: [Snide note: I know which department has/had the worst offenders, and they have the highest turnover already, not to mention the most infractions of other parts of the handbook. I may try and check a few forums on my breaks, but I'm not streaming video and music and wearing jeans on a Tuesday and generally making the corporate office look like a high school gone wrong.] )

Clearly, they are a bit sheepish about putting in a national-company-wide VoIP system (among other modern technologies) and not upgrading the capacity of the lines (this plus a planned scanning-to-the-network plan, going paperless, etc... and we're still using a single T1? Seriously?) and instead getting Very Stern at us instead of just quietly fixing the problem. Huh.

Which means that now I can't even check stuff at lunch breaks. Boo. (I rather liked my mid-morning break for wecomics and coffee. It was quite pleasant, and reduced the miserable monotony of clerical stuff that comes across my desk. Not to mention the much-needed dose of humor to make it to lunchtime, some days.)

Also, I had some Nifty and Deep Thoughts about seeing Liza Dalby on Tuesday evening, but for now I'll sum up: I looked pretty kimono-HIME fierce, I thought, and I DIDN'T make a complete and utter fool of myself (just a bit of an idiot, the usual stuff, like babbling too much). Also, I wasn't the only person in kimono. Just the only person who qualified for the 'before' part of the Kitsuke What Not To Wear (Kimono Purists' Edition). :D (I also got home just before 2am and had to get up for work by 7am, so I'm not really entirely coherent at this point.) Buying the hi-tops was TOTALLY worth it. :D

Pictures later - they're still on the camera and my computer is having a LOT of trouble tonight. I wonder if buying another 500MB RAM card would be an investment to stave off this poor thing's death just a little longer... I've got 720 total right now, but not a lot of disk space. It's a bit hit-or-miss, I think.

Been a LONG day.

You'd think that sitting from 9am to 3pm wouldn't be tiring, but it is when you have to manage a perfectly Victorian posture. (I helped a coworker out with her photography class project, as best I could given the lack of promised materials available to us, and what was supposed to be about "an hour, hour and a half, probably no more than two hours" shoot starting at 9am lasted until 3pm. My back hurts. Oy. Though a few of the preview shots looked good.

I have a smattering of halloween pics to upload - I was Harajuku-Gei as my theme (funky geisha/Chun-Li wig, green kimono, and thematically appropriate black-and-orange obi, plus arm warmers and funky chunky boots). I also snapped a pic of a coworker's hubby who was head-to-toe movie replica Jack Sparrow, complete with dreads and beads in his double-braided goatee. It was a sweet look. I demanded rum and pictures.

I LOVE my office job, even when it's mind-numbingly dull. Really, I do, because this office puts SO MUCH energy into things like Halloween [versus a past Job That We Will Not Talk About where even the mention of trick-or-treating was looked upon as teh Devil's Work!!!! ohnoes!!]. There was a prize for best potluck main dish, potluck dessert, creative costume, Unit-wide costume/theme (a cruise ship with lounge singer and open bar won that), and scariest costume (guy who does professional zombie makeup won that one. Again, apparently. :P) My supervisor won most creative as a bag of marbles, which was pretty much white netting she'd sewn into a bag shape with openings for her legs and arms, a drawstring neck, and then filled it with balloons, the smaller of which escaped - we kept telling her she'd lost her marbles again. Bad puns, fun times.

Mom went and bought herself a Macbook Pro laptop. (Why pro, you ask, when she's only marginally computer literate? Screen size. I am in so much lust with that thing. O-M-G I want the desktop version now. Jeebus, it's pretty. And it goes ZOOM.)

Missed the SCA post-mortem event. Given that my post mortem included things like, "Yes, I WOULD change this or that", I'm rather bummed I didn't go. I'm also not-bummed I didn't go, because I really don't feel like trying to play Department Manager until I absolutely have to. Now I just get to guess as to whether or not the guy I was deputy to checked his email at all after 2pm yesterday, and if he bothered to read what I wrote him. Guess I'll hear about it one way or another. I usually do. [And people wonder why I enjoy reading all the sca snark comms.]

Waiting on laundry and Aunt and Uncle to arrive (again - they went to San Diego for the weekend), and I need to do homework. TTFN, loyal (and patient, or at least pityingly nice) readers.

RRRRRRGH!

Okay, I *heart* Mac stuff, I really do.

But god-DAMN it is difficult to get a G3 set up with wireless when it's not airport-extreme-OK and the old airport cards are non-existent. *mutter*

Belkin better refund their shipping, the misleading bastards. I'm gonna need that 40 bucks towards a DIFFERENT wireless something-or-other (I'll settle for USB at this point).

In other news, I need to research financing plans for a new laptop (a refurb. G4, even) - if I can swing it for under 75/month, it'd be pretty sweet. [Mine's just too damn out of date.]
